If you snack, eat fruits and vegetables instead of foods high in carbohydrates. Fruits and vegetables that contain lots of water, like melons, pears, celery, and cucumbers, are the best. Eat cheese with lunch or as a snack. Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Swiss, and other aged cheeses are especially helpful, as they trigger the flow of saliva. Avoid sticky, chewy foods like raisins, granola bars, and honey, as these stick to the teeth and make it difficult for saliva to wash the food particles away. If you eat sweets, try to eat them with meals instead of as snacks. The mouth usually has an increased amount of saliva around mealtime, so the sugar from desserts will be washed away more easily. Drink water instead of juice or soda. Juices and sodas contain sugar. Water will aid in washing food particles off of the teeth.
