If you’ve recently injured any of your soft tissues, like your tongue, cheeks, gums, or lips, it’s important to do all you can to improve the situation and control the bleeding. In order to do so, our Simple Smiles Restorative & Cosmetic Dentistry team recommends doing the following things:

-Rinse: Rinse your mouth for about one minute with a mild salt-water solution. This will help clean the injured area and reduce the risk of infection. If you’re not sure how to make saltwater, all you need to do is mix a half of a teaspoon of salt with a cup of warm water.

-Apply pressure: Apply pressure to the bleeding area with a moist gauze pad or tea bag. Hold in place for 15 to 20 minutes. If the bleeding still hasn’t stopped, replace the bloody pad or bag with a new one and repeat this process.

-Reduce swelling: Try to reduce swelling, control bleeding, and relieve pain by holding a cold compress to the outside of the affected area. It’s best to do this for about 15-20 minutes.

-See your dentist: If the previous tips do not stop the bleeding, see your dentist right away or visit the emergency room. Continue to apply pressure to the injured area until you are treated.
